Last night Casey Powell tweeted “South Florida @MLL_Lacrosse team coming in 2014. #22easy”. This is the first sign that a team could be coming and I will continue to keep everyone posted as the situation develops!
When Casey Powell took over at St. Andrews in South Florida he was in charge of an established program. He took over a school that has the most state championships in Florida. He has a new battle on his hands by taking over North Broward Prep. Last year NBP went 3-9 and barely managed to win those games. They beat those three teams by a combined four points. Over the weekend Major League Lacrosse had its second game at FAU Stadium in Boca Raton, Florida. Last year the MLL All-Star Game was held at FAU Stadium as well. The All-Star game had much success last year with a crowd of 4,841 people and gaining consideration for a spot as an expansion team. In Florida we usually get a lot of delay’s especially with the unique and somewhat “bi-polar” weather. When practice or a game is cancelled it’s usually because of rain, lightning, thunderstorms etc. With summer just starting it means more rain, but more heat! When you hear “lacrosse” you think Hopkins, UNC, Duke, Maryland, Cornell, Syracuse etc. You think of Up North New England, New York Maryland. Well people are starting to shift their attention down south. They say lacrosse is the fastest growing sport in the Country, and Florida and Texas are just “booming” with new lacrosse teams. Florida State University is a club team currently playing in the the MCLA as well as the SELC, which they won the championship for in 2011. The Seminoles have had much success. They finished the regular 2013 season with a 9-7 record, then lost to the Richmond Spiders in the first round of this year’s SELC playoffs. Summer always seems to be dominated by one thing, lacrosse tournaments, and over the weekend I was in a tournament with over 70 teams, but the tournament was overshadowed by the rain.
